We took cameras behind the scenes at Barings to uncover an exciting zero waste initiative in the heart of London. This perfect closed-loop solution was brought to life in our case study video - go behind the scenes of the shoot and find out how Barings benefits from our solution.

Closing the Loop on Food and Packaging Waste

For Sara Stewart, who runs the catering facility at Barings, sustainability is integral to their business with a robust ESG policy and a commitment to net zero by 2050. The video shows how Planglow and PRM Waste Systems’ closed-loop solution helps Barings improve sustainability and reduce unavoidable food waste.

Our Marketing Director, Rachael Sawtell says:

“What’s special about sending the food waste and Planglow’s labels and compostable packaging to the bio-processor is really the simplicity. You simply dispose of the food waste and the compostable packaging in the cafe bin. It’s then collected and fed into the bio-processor. The output can then be used as either soil or biomass fuel, resulting in a complete closed-loop solution.”

Ben Moore, Technical Director at PRM Waste Systems, who was filmed at their offices in Wellington, tells us that within 24 hours, food and compostable packaging waste will be turned into a stabilised, low-odour product that has reduced by up to 80% of the original volume. This residue can be used as fuel to supplement a suitable biomass unit or put to other uses such as soil enrichment to help grow more crops or sent to AD plants to be turned into biogas, a highly renewable fuel.

At Barings, food waste was an issue, lying in bins on-site for perhaps two to three days. Now with the bio-processor they can reduce food packaging and unavoidable food waste all in one go and use the resultant product to feed their terrace plants. As Sara Stewart says in the film:

“From the point of view of waste and storage and hygiene, it is a no-brainer in terms of having a bio-processor and using one.”

All the tenants in the building use the bio-processor, meaning that no food waste leaves the building at all.

Who created the closed-loop case study video?

Thanks to New Fruit Productions and Rob Hayward as the creative director (you can spot him in some of the behind-the-scene pics!) for filming the video. We think you’ll agree they did a great job in bringing this sustainable initiative to life.
