Over a Quarter of Businesses Were Unprepared for Natasha’s Law

We saw a 31% uptake in subscribers to our Natasha’s Law compliant labelling app in the three months after the legislation came into force. During the first month alone, food businesses across the UK used the app to lawfully label 10 million grab and go items, doubling the previous month’s pre-deadline total of 5 million.

+ Use of Natasha’s Law Compliant Food Labels Doubles After October Deadline

Feb 2, 2022

We estimate that almost a third of businesses were unprepared for Natasha’s Law. It’s been a challenging time for operators of all sizes however, large scale organisations have been able to dedicate greater resources towards compliance well ahead of the deadline. Something we have witnessed amongst our large contracting catering customers such as Elior. Meanwhile, many small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) were understandably less prepared. Concerns regarding if and how their business would survive the pandemic took the lead while prolonged periods of closure or limited trading all too frequently left businesses lacking the time and perceived costs of implementing changes in line with the new laws.

Since October, we have received a record number of enquiries and users of our food labelling app increased 31%. The majority of new business has come from SMEs who simply haven't been able to do anything sooner or, in some cases, had not heard of the laws until they came into effect. Considering the magnitude of Natasha’s Law and what this has meant for food operators, it was challenging to get the message across to these businesses and only after the deadline passed did this start to change.

Planglow first began helping businesses of all sizes to get Natasha’s Law compliant back in 2019, when the legislation was initially announced. In addition to our low-cost and user-friendly food labelling software - LabelLogic Live - we also curated a selection of label designs that could accommodate the additional information required on pack. LabelLogic Live was then integrated with other leading software providers (nine have been completed, further integrations are also currently in progress). These partnerships offer food and drink providers a range of end to end solutions for managing their existing product data. It allows them to utilise their own recipes and ingredients data from within another software platform and use it to create and print fully compliant food labelling in the LabelLogic Live app.

One of our key partnerships is with food data experts Erudus, providing LabelLogic Live users with nutritional data for 42,000+ branded products from 800 manufacturers and 140 regional and national wholesalers which can be added to their labels instantly, simply using a product code.
