How allergen labels and labelling software keep customers safe
Feb 17, 2026
An increased reliance on labelling
As a result of Natasha’s Law, people with allergies are now relying on improved label information. For example, Jessie Flaum, who has life-threatening allergies, revealed: "Clear and honest labelling means I no longer live with the constant fear that the packaged food is hiding something dangerous." (BBC)
With so many people now relying on accurate allergen labelling, caterers and food businesses need to ensure their labels are clear and compliant.
What’s Natasha’s Law? A quick reminder
Natasha's Law requires that if you offer food or drink pre-packaged for direct sale (PPDS), then you need to include full ingredient declarations on pack with allergens highlighted in bold.
The law requires the full ingredients declarations on pack in QUID order (the percentage order from largest to smallest) with any of the 14 major allergens marked in bold:
● Cereals containing gluten
● Crustaceans
● Eggs
● Fish
● Peanuts
● Soybeans
● Milk
● Nuts (almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, cashews, pecans, Brazil nuts, pistachios, macadamia nuts)
● Celery
● Mustard
● Sesame seeds
● Sulphur dioxide and sulphites
● Lupin
● Molluscs

Guidance update for non-prepacked food
As of March 2025, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) introduced new best-practice guidance. It stated that providers of non-prepacked products should also make consumers aware of the presence of any allergens in products in writing, as well as verbally. It now sets the expectation that businesses provide written allergen information for non-prepacked food (such as restaurant meals, café treats, or deli items) as well.
Why getting it right matters
Customers rely on your labels to make safe choices - and even more so post Natasha’s Law. Accurate allergen labelling is not only about following the law, but also about protecting your customers and giving them confidence in your menus.
The challenge for businesses
We all recognise the importance of Natasha’s Law, but meeting these regulations can feel challenging.
● Recipe management: You may offer multiple products with varying ingredients, which makes keeping track of every component difficult, especially when recipes or suppliers change.
● Staff turnover: New team members need thorough training on allergen awareness and labelling requirements.
● Human error: Hand-written or manually typed labels are prone to human error. A missed ingredient, a typo, or outdated information can slip through.
● Add labelling to food packaging: When you change a recipe, every label needs to be updated immediately. Coordinating this across multiple sites or busy service periods adds another layer of complexity.
